A mum left court smarting after a judge called her “a shocking role model” for her 22-year-old daughter who was standing in the dock.

The mum called out some comment to Judge Robert Murfitt who had just jailed the daughter for five months for a series of thefts, fraud, breach of prison release conditions, and breach of bail.

Family members called out messages of love from the public seats as the younger woman was taken away to begin her jail term.

She had stolen cigarette papers, vodka, and shoes, and was ordered to pay reparation of about $350 by instalments after her release.

Judge Murfitt said the woman had left school at 12, and had an early start in crime in the Youth Court at Manukau, Auckland.

She was now becoming established as a thief.

Her mother had 218 convictions herself, said the judge. “She’s been a shocking role model.”
